Getting started with katanas?

I mainly have an interest in katanas. When I used to take karate classes I only got to purple belt and put it on hold due to the cost. I don't know if that will help me using a katana just throwing it out there... Also just to throw out there I can read japanese as well (although I'm not that good at speaking it yet and still have a lot of kanji to learn lol) if that will help in any way.

My questions:
What do you suggest I should buy for a practice sword? I'm obviously not going with the deal but a wooden sword..

What types of martial arts use katanas?

Are there videos I can watch to learn this or is it the type of thing you must learn in person?
